Conquest of Makkah

The triumphant return to Makkah and the general pardon.

The March on Makkah

When the Quraysh violated the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah by attacking a Muslim ally, the Prophet ﷺ prepared an army of 10,000 Muslims and marched on Makkah. The operation was conducted with such speed and secrecy that the Quraysh had no time to prepare resistance. Abu Sufyan, their leader, accepted Islam on the outskirts of the city.

Entry into Makkah

The Prophet ﷺ entered Makkah humbly, bowing his head so low in gratitude that his chin nearly touched the saddle. He went straight to the Kaabah, circumambulated it on camel-back, then destroyed the 360 idols around it, reciting: "Truth has come and falsehood has vanished. Indeed, falsehood is ever bound to vanish." (17:81).

The General Pardon

Standing at the door of the Kaabah, the Prophet ﷺ asked the Makkans what they expected from him — the people who had persecuted, tortured, and exiled him and his companions for thirteen years. He declared: "Go — you are free." This act of mercy and forgiveness is considered one of the most remarkable in human history. The vast majority of Makkans accepted Islam that day.
